This year we have seen an influx of paver related projects. This leads me to the question of WHY?
Why do clients choose to install pavers? Three things come to mind: looks, durability, function.
Why install pavers instead of a flagstone pathway? In this situation, I’d say pavers function better as a pathway material. Maintenance is greatly reduced while still maintaining a more natural look over concrete.
Why install a paver patio or firepit rather than concrete? In this regard pavers have all the function that a concrete patio does but also has the enhanced appearance clients are looking for. In this regard has both the form and function clients want.
Why paver blocks for retention instead of less costly boulder retaining walls? Again, aesthetics, paver blocks simply have a cleaner more uniform look than boulder retaining walls. Additionally, from an engineering standpoint they are more structural and functional for retention.
Additional items to consider about pavers:
If underground utilities need to be repaired under a paver patio, pavers can be removed for repair and reinstalled afterward. The result is an unseen patch where the repair was made. If a similar circumstance is undergone with a concrete or asphalt driveway or walkway the patch will always be visible.
Concrete is subject to cracks and spalling. While also made of concrete, pavers are much stronger than concrete. This is due to their higher psi rating. Pavers are made of a higher psi strength and are held to much higher manufacturing standards. The psi rating of interlocking concrete pavers is between 6,000 psi and 8,500 psi. While the rating of most concrete walks and driveways is only 3,000 to 4,000 psi.
It’s all about the base. When installing pavers, more care is taken to prepare the base than when installing concrete patios. The base is the foundation of the pathway or driveway. Focusing on the base ensures a long-lasting surface without cracks or settling. If there is settling in a paver patio, due to erosion or other means, unnoticeable repairs can be easily made.
If drainage is a concern, permeable pavers can be installed and allow water to penetrate the surface unlike a concrete or asphalt surface. If your landscape has a substantial amount of hardscape then this may be a viable option when considering your drainage solutions.
The colors, style, shape, texture and versatility of paver products are many. This allows for endless creative options for your walls, pillars, driveway, patios or walkways. The result of a well implemented paver project is a better space with increased curb appeal and home value. These are all great things to consider when planning your next project.
