So You Want to Plant a Tree?

THE STORY.

Trees can do wonders for your home and for the planet. Trees have been known to increase a home’s appraised value and curb appeal. Adding a tree to certain areas of your property can also provide much needed shade, as well as cool your home and reduce your energy costs. Trees are also a huge help to the environment by reducing greenhouse gases and reducing soil erosion. While the initial investment may seem steep, the benefits will continue years after planting. Here are some tips to help you plant a tree!

Proper planning.
Picking the proper tree for your property requires a little foresight. While the sapling you get from the nursery may be small now, it’s important to know what your tree will look like 10, 20 or 30 years after planting. Be aware of overhead objects, like roofs and power lines. Also make sure to know how wide the canopy will grow to make sure the tree is planted far enough away from fences or buildings.

Which tree is best.
Before selecting a type of tree, think about what your property can handle. Fruit trees have beautiful springtime blooms and provide the benefit of food but can attract birds, and the falling fruit can liter sidewalks and other walkways. Deciduous trees have leaves that provide color in the summer and fall but can make yards messy. Evergreens keep their color all year long, but pine needles can be tricky to remove. Know what you are signing up for.

Plant it right.
Perhaps the most common mistake when putting a tree in the ground is digging a hole that is both too big and too wide. Dig a hole that is as large as the tree’s container and cover the root ball loosely with soil. Make sure to place mulch on top of the freshly planted tree to keep the soil moist while the roots establish.
