Landscaping 101: A Beginner's Guide to Grass

THE STORY.

Did you know there are approximately 12,000 different species of grass?

You’ve probably noticed the grass in your lawn is different from the grass at your local park, which is different than the grass at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco. Read on for more about the different types of grass and how you can keep your commercial lawn healthy.

What are the different types of grass?

The 12,000 species of grass are classified into 12 subfamilies, and those 12 subfamilies are divided into two categories:

Warm-season grasses

As their name suggests, warm-season grasses thrive in warm weather climates like the southeastern and southwestern United States. Some of the most common warm-season grasses include:

  • Bermuda grass
  • Dichondra
  • Centipede grass
  • Zoysia grass

Cool-season grasses

Cool-season grasses thrive in parts of the country with wide temperature fluctuations. Cool-season grasses do well in high altitude areas like Colorado and Utah, as well as cooler regions like the northeast and the pacific northwest. Some of the most common cool-season grasses include:

  • Bentgrass
  • Fine fescue
  • Ryegrass

How can I keep my grass healthy?

No matter the type of grass that’s planted at your commercial property, basic maintenance is always the same; however, you’ll want to select an experienced landscaping team to partner with. At Lawn Butler, three of our commercial landscaping services are specifically tailored to grass maintenance and care.

Aeration

Lawn aeration involves removing small plugs of soil from your commercial lawn. Aeration reduces soil compaction, which promotes hydration and increased root growth. Seasonal aeration is one of the easiest ways to keep your lawn pristine year-round.

Fertilization

The grass is just like you, in that it needs vitamins and nutrients to thrive. Fertilizing your commercial lawn throughout the year ensures your grass receives everything it needs to grow healthy and strong.

Watering

Many parts of Utah are abnormally dry. Our expertise in xeriscaping and high altitude landscaping will keep your lawn green and healthy without wasting any water.

High-quality commercial lawn care begins and ends at Lawn Butler. Call 801-485-7204 to request your consultation today.
